Submodalities Belief Change Process

  1. Think of a Limiting Belief. Elicit the Submodalities.
  2. Think of a believe that is no longer true. NB. State it in the present tense. Elicit the Submodalities.
  3. Do the Contrastive Analysis. Map across the Submodalities from the Limiting Belief (step #1) into those from the belief that is no longer true (step #2). Notice the Drivers.

TEST: Now, what do you think about that old belief (step #1)?

  1. Think of a belief, which is for you absolutely true? Elicit the Submodalities.
  2. Can you think of a belief that you want to have, which is the opposite of the belief in step #1? Elicit the Submodalities.
  3. Do the Contrastive Anaysis. Map across the Submodalities (especially the Drivers) from the desired belief (step #5) into those from the absolutely true belief (step #4).

TEST: Now, what do you believe? Why do you have the new belief?

NB. This process works best when the 4 beliefs are elicited at the start.

Submodalities – Mapping across

use a submodalities checklist

  1. Rapport/Resourceful states/Outcome
  2. Can you think of a food (or something) that you like and wish you did not?
    Check for congruence.
What would they gain if they no longer liked it?
What would they lose if they no longer liked it?
  3. Think of a food (or something) that you don’t like of a similar consistency.
NB. The closer the ‘dislike’ is to the ‘like’ the better. Make sure that it is of the same logical type i.e. food with food, drink with drink.
  4. Elicit the Submodalities of food that the client likes and wishes that they didn’t.
  5. Elicit the Submodalities of food that the client doesn’t like.
  6. Do the contrastive analysis and look for the drivers. Especially notice “Location”.
  7. Ask the client to make the submodalities of the food liked the same as those of the food disliked, one by one i.e. Map Across the Submodalities.
  8. Ask the client to seal in place the changes.
  9. Test and future pace.
